The Enigma machine was put into operation in the early 1930s and encrypted the communications of the German Armed Forces throughout the Second World War. The ability to decrypt the billions of combinations generated by its mechanisms was one of the most important contributions to the defeat of the Third Reich. While the cryptological work carried out at Bletchley Park is relatively well known, its Polish roots remain largely unknown. However, they are no less crucial, as with the help of the French secret service, the Biuro Szyfrów in Warsaw managed to crack the German code in 1932 eight years before the British! On the eve of the German invasion, the small team of pioneers shared their knowledge with the Allies, taking care to protect their secret from enemy indiscretions. Their adventures continued in France until the armistice in 1940, then in the free zone and North Africa until 1942. However, the adventures of these pioneers of decryption are by no means limited to the deliberations of brilliant mathematicians and the reading of important dispatches, but reveal a whole gallery of secret service figures, including Hollywood spies, double agents and shady smugglers.
