The fighting of the Second World War in northern Germany did not end when the British reached the Elbe east of Hamburg on 19 April 1945. Hardly any book or chronicle devotes more than a few pages to this bitter struggle between two army corps on each side. This book describes in detail the British advance to the Elbe, the fighting for the last German bridgeheads south of the river barrier, in Artlenburg, Hohnstorf/Elbe, Bleckede, Neu Darchau and Dömitz. It describes the ten-day advance of the British VIII Corps and the efforts of the German leadership during this period to establish a last front on the Elbe.
