On 6 June 1944, the Allied armada invading from the air and on the beaches of Normandy brought with it some of the most famous war correspondents, including photographer Robert Capa, writer and journalist Ernest Hemingway, and later Cornelius Ryan, author of The Longest Day. Women, too, although denied access to the front lines, reported to the world on the largest amphibious expedition ever undertaken. Martha Gellhorn, Lee Miller, and Helen Kirkpatrick were among the most brilliant of them.
