Descriptionof Hitlers Inselwahn. Die britischen Kanalinseln unter deutscher Besetzung 1940-1945
-
Manufacturer
On 28 June 1940, the Germans attacked the Channel Islands from France. Bombs hit the port of St Helier in Jersey and St Peter Port in Guernsey. 44 inhabitants were killed in these attacks. British soil thus fell into the hands of the Germans and remained there until its liberation in May 1945. John Nettles has presented a detailed account of the German occupation period from 1940 to 1945 in his superbly researched book. He lets contemporary witnesses have their say and talk about their experiences. The author does not leave out the delicate aspects of the occupation, such as the tense relationship between the Channel Islands and the British government. The complex case of collaboration is illuminated just as knowledgeably as the fate of the Jews and forced labourers on the islands.
