On 10 July 1943, after careful preparation, the Allies began landing in Sicily and conquering the island in an operation codenamed Operation Husky. Since early spring 1943, British intelligence had taken very sophisticated measures to keep the Italian and German command in the dark about the date and destination of the landing. Among other things, they hoped to delay German reinforcements to Sicily, reduce the threat to their invasion convoys from the Luftwaffe, and keep Italian battleships and cruisers away from Sicilian waters. Nevertheless, the Italian General Staff and the German command in Italy expected the Allied attack in Sicily. Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini, the commander of the German forces in Italy, Field Marshal Albert Kesselring, and the head of the Italian High Command, General Vittorio Ambrosio, were convinced, despite all the diversionary manoeuvres of the Allies, that the invasion would take place on this large Mediterranean island.
