The anti-war novel, first published in 1930, describes the experiences of student and war volunteer Adolf Reisiger, who fights on the fronts in France and Russia during World War 1. Originally an enthusiastic soldier, he becomes increasingly critical and finally realises that war is "the greatest crime of all". Edlef Köppen uses the latest techniques of literary representation of the time, such as the inner monologue and the montage technique, for his literarily sophisticated novel: the original documents, many of which are inserted without comment into the fictional plot, stand in sharp contrast to the hero's subjective account and illuminate the absurdity in the official portrayal of the war. In 1935 the book was banned by the National Socialists.
