At dawn on 6 June 1944, the 177 French berets of the I Battalion of the Marine Fusilier Command landed alongside the Allies on Sword Beach. They were the only French fighters to land on the beaches of Normandy. Their leader was a banker in his normal professional life: Philippe Kieffer. Although these green berets have become national heroes in recent decades due to the symbolic power they embody, the lives of most of them are still little known to the general public. Who were these men? Where did they come from? How old were they? How did they join the commandos? What became of them? The authors have set themselves an extraordinary challenge: They wanted to track down the faces of these 177 French commando soldiers and portray their lives. From official archives to private attics, they were able to discover unusual routes with the help of numerous enthusiasts and families of the commando soldiers. In 2023, after nine years of searching, they found the last of these faces!
