On mobilisation at the end of August 1939, the 11th Zouave Regiment was formed from reservists aged between 24 and 30 in the Belley region. It joined the 2nd DINA on 4 November and trained behind the Maginot Line and later in the Valenciennes sector. When it became involved in the Battle of the Dyle on 14 and 15 May, it was quickly pressed by the Germans and withdrew to Saint-Amand-les-Eaux and then tried to reach Armentières and Dunkirk. The Germans were faster and the 11th Zouave Regiment had to fight a heavy battle at Oignies on 26 and 27 May. On 28 May it reached Haubourdin amidst a large mix of troops, but was unable to advance any further. It therefore took part in the defence of the town until 31 May, as well as in the defence of Lomme and Lambersart. On 1 June, the 2nd DINA surrendered with full honours. The 11th Zouaves provided a detachment for the parade in the main square of Lille.
