In 1938, General Ottavio Zoppi published his book Due volte con gli Arditi sul Piave ("Twice with the Arditi on the Piave"), leaving a written record of his experiences as commander of the 1st Assault Division in the two decisive battles of the final phase of the First World War on the Italian front: the Battle of Solstizio in June 1918 and the Battle of Vittorio Veneto in October 1918.

The reasons that led him to write this book are explained in the preface: it is not a chronicle, not history, but a narration of the events as they unfolded and of which he was a witness and protagonist, interweaving the facts of the weapons and the human factors that are inextricably linked. Above all, he writes about his exceptional warriors, the Arditi, to leave them a written memorial and to describe their exploits. Among the numerous publications on the Arditi, this reprint of this rare and sought-after volume, edited by Monica Gasparotto Battaglia and the Federazione Nazionale Arditi d'Italia, stands out as one of the few contemporary scientific-military-historical testimonies on the Arditi.
