In April 1915, the popular Bavarian homeland poet travels to the Eastern Front as a war correspondent, just as the Russian troops are being pushed back from Courland, Lithuania and Poland and the important fortress of Przemysl in Galicia is being captured. Ganghofer embeds his observation of the fighting entertainingly and in his own way in the heartfelt description of human characters and landscape images. He meets Field Marshal Hindenburg and his chief of staff Ludendorff, suffers a serious war wound and is awarded the Iron Cross. His patriotically coloured descriptions of the war have not been reprinted since 1915 and are now available again in a new edition to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War 1.
