We only know about Regula Engel's life from her own account: in 1821, at the age of sixty, she wrote the Biography of the Widow of Colonel Florian Engel. In this account, she takes us on a journey alongside her husband, a Swiss officer in Napoleon's service, through the whole of Europe, to the foot of the pyramids, to the battles of Austerlitz and Waterloo, where she loses her husband and two sons and is herself taken to hospital, seriously wounded, dressed in an officer's uniform. Regula Engel's biography is one of the most exciting autobiographical texts in 19th-century German-language literature, a moving and often amusing account of the life of a highly energetic and humorous woman of the people.
