Description
1799, France prepared for the expected military actions of the second coalition, which Russia had now joined. It was to be a war on three fronts: in Egypt, in Italy and in Switzerland. While Napoleon Bonaparte was far away on the Egyptian theatre, France's opponents on the European theatre were advancing into those territories that France had laboriously won three years earlier.
In the last third of the year, the Austro-Russian threat gradually ebbed away and Napoleon Bonaparte used the favour to strengthen his own power and install a strong government under his leadership. The "long" year of 1799 ended without an all-decisive military clash. It was not until the following year and after the decisive French victories at Hohenlinden and Marengo that there was any hope that the guns would fall silent. These are the events which Lionel Marquis sets out in this book of almost 300 pages, illustrated with more than 200 illustrations.
