Sabine Ebert began writing historical novels out of a passion for Saxon and German history, all of which became bestsellers. She moved to Leipzig specifically to work on her novel about the Battle of the Nations and its sequel, and quickly felt at home in the trade fair city. In Sabine Ebert's novel, we find ourselves in Germany after the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig: Napoleon is defeated, but far from defeated. No one suspects that it will take more than a year and a half before his final defeat at Waterloo in 1815. Instead of the hoped-for peace, ever greater misery descends upon many German cities.
The fleeing Grande Armée traces a trail of blood, hunger, devastation and disease through the country. Even young Henriette, who went to Leipzig to help the wounded, has to leave the city and marry head over heels in order to survive. When peace is finally concluded in Vienna after cynical haggling, Europe is reordered - but with bloody sacrifices. In moving scenes, Sabine Ebert illuminates the little-known period between the Battle of the Nations and Waterloo, a time of incredible drama for many German cities. To do this, the bestselling author studied thousands of pages of original sources over many years and worked closely with historians and military officers. The result is something great and rare: history that gets under your skin!
Sabine Ebert was born in Aschersleben, grew up in Berlin and studied Latin American studies and linguistics in Rostock. In her adopted home of many years, Freiberg, she worked as a journalist and wrote several non-fiction books. Passionate about Saxon and German history, she began writing historical novels, all of which became bestsellers.
