The author takes up an aspect of the Napoleonic Wars that has received practically little attention but is very interesting. The great armies that criss-crossed Europe, fighting their skirmishes and battles everywhere, caused various forms of turmoil, legal instability and chaos in countless places. In the shadow of the actual war front, other conflicts often raged, small and larger wars, whole provinces rose up in armed revolts. Simple bandits were often at the centre of these "dirty wars" of ambushes, night raids, looting and rape, which spread throughout the Western world from Constantinople to Chile. Some of these bandits became military leaders or presidents of states. The various forms of brigandage during the Napoleonic Wars are traced in this study.
