In 1911, the letters and field notes of General Sigismond du Pouget de Nadaillac (17871837) were published in the Carnet de la Sabretache. This work, written by his grandson, Colonel Jean-Francois-Albert-Sigismond de Nadaillac, contained excerpts from the future general's military correspondence, supplemented by the contents of a travel diary he had begun in 1812. This publication ultimately deals with the campaigns of the author of the letters and diaries during the First Empire, from his entry into service in November 1806 to the first Bourbon Restoration in 1814, which is reproduced here in its entirety, with care taken to add only a few notes and chapter headings to place the people and events in their historical and military context without distorting them. The future General Sigismond du Pouget de Nadaillac joined the Emperor's Ordonnance Gendarmerie in 1806, a corps equivalent to the Imperial Guard. He subsequently became a line officer and served Napoleon until his abdication in 1814, when he was stranded in Wesel with the detachment of the 5th Hussar Regiment, which he commanded as squadron leader: Here, then, are the letters and field notes of Squadron Leader de Nadaillac.
