In the course of the revolutionary turmoil of 1848, the two duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, which belonged to Denmark, also rose up against the mother country. The German population wanted to prevent the incorporation of Schleswig into an all-Danish state. The rebelling duchies had to build up an army almost from scratch. In doing so, they were initially able to fall back on the German-born parts of the Danish regiments. In the ensuing conflict, the Schleswig-Holstein Uprising, the provisional state government succeeded in forming a powerful army that was able to effectively resist the Danes' attempts to suppress the uprising for three years. In the end, it was not so much military as political reasons that led to the failure of the uprising.
This volume not only describes the military course of the Schleswig-Holstein uprising, but also explains in detail how the two states organised, equipped and fielded a modern, powerful army of up to 40,000 men. The Schleswig-Holsteiners were open to military innovations, such as rifled percussion rifles for the infantry, new types of ammunition for the guns, and the first German submarine for the small but proud Schleswig-Holstein navy.
