Hannibal was characterised by an unusual awareness for his time of the possibilities and limits of time and space for military manoeuvres. In order to avoid a Roman attack on Spain, he crossed the Alps with probably more than 50,000 soldiers, 9,000 horsemen and 37 war elephants on a pass that can no longer be precisely determined and reached Aosta and Ivrea through the territory of the Salasser. The army suffered heavy losses in the Alps, but could be reinforced with Celts from the Po Valley.
