A hoplite was a member of the main force of the Greek armies. of the archaic and classical periods. The hoplites' armament was called panoply. The most important protective weapon was the large, round shield, which could cover the entire upper body. It was made of wood and was usually first framed with bronze, later covered with bronze sheeting, and measured about 1 m in diameter.
