Alonso de Contreras (real name Alonso de GuillÃn) (* 6 January 1582 in Madrid; Ä 1641 or after 1645) was a Spanish soldier, sailor, privateer, adventurer and writer, best known for his autobiography. It was not until 1900 that the archivist, historian and Americanist Manuel Serrano y Sanz (1866Ä¾1932) first published ContrerasÄº's memoirs, which, despite their adventurous content, proved to be thoroughly reliable and accurate in terms of location, time and facts.
He fought, among other things, as a privateer for the Maltese and in the West Indies against Sir Walter Raleigh's ships. - Wikipedia -
