Description
As the most significant innovation, between 1534/1536 and 1704 the Spanish formed the tercios, combat units of around 3000 men. In the beginning, a pikemen squadron of eight companies was surrounded by a "hedge" of two companies of musketeers and/or arquebusiers. The musketeers/arquebusiers were engaged in a firefight with the enemy infantry and were covered by the pikemen, especially from approaching cavalry.
The term Spanish Orderly actually refers to the chequered, staggered formation of several tercios (four as a brigade, at least seven as a double brigade). The defeat at the Battle of Rocroi in 1643 by a modern French army led Spain to abandon this rigid order of battle. -Wikipedia-
