Union Army of the Northern States
Wäduring the American Civil War (1861 to 1865), there was an Army of the Potomac (Potomac Army) on both sides.
Wäduring the Bürger War, it was customary to name larger army units after the areas in which they were primarily active. The Potomac Army was mainly deployed around Washington, D.C.. This is why the name of the Potomac River was chosen. It had four commanders-in-chief, all but the last of whom were removed from office for incompetence. The last commander-in-chief was Major General George G. Meade, who had been appointed in June 1863, just days before the Army of the Potomac was to fight one of its most important battles, the Battle of Gettysburg. - Wikipedia -
