Description
This soldier carries the Model 1841 "Mississippi" Rifle. The nickname originated during the Mexican War when Jefferson Davis was appointed Colonel of the Mississippi Rifles, a volunteer regiment from that state. Regarded today as one of the most handsome weapons of its time because of its brass hardware, the Mississippi Rifle will always be synonymous with the American Civil War. The rifle was originally produced in .54 caliber, but before the war many were converted to .58 caliber to accept standard ammunition used by the federal government. The rifle, known for its accuracy, was considered highly desirable and was used in both armies, primarily in flank companies within infantry regiments.
