Zoya was a Soviet partisan (Unit 9903) who conducted a mix of violent and non violent sabotage against the German forces on the Eastern Front. As well as cutting telephone lines and destroying roads, she set fire to buildings which were being occupied by the invading Wehrmacht.
After her horrific end following her capture, Zoya and her story became well known across the Soviet Union, with Stalin announcing her "The People's Heroine", and posthumously awarding her "Heroine of the Soviet Union"
"For Zoya!" became a battle cry as it was written across tanks and other weaponry. While Zoya was one woman (girl, really) her image and death resonated with so many as the face of just one of the hundreds of thousands of partisans in the war.
