In alliance with France since 1803. Hesse-Darmstadt was now of interest to France as a supplier of troops. By joining the Confederation of the Rhine, the new Grand Duke of the enlarged state, the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, undertook to provide a contingent of 4,000 soldiers. These were distributed among three infantry regiments, three fusilier battalions, one chevauleger regiment and three artillery companies. Troops from Hesse-Darmstadt were involved in the Fourth Coalition War against Prussia, in the Coalition War of 1809 against the Empire of Austria, but above all in the Spanish and Russian campaigns of 1812.
