Originally Austrian regiments, Croats, Illyrians and Dalmatians changed flag and became part of Napoleon's Grande Armee. Pandur (Hungarian pandúr; from Latin banderium for banner) originally referred to an armed bodyguard of Croatian nobles in Slavonia in the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as a member of an Imperial Austrian military unit in the Silesian Wars.
