Louis Alexandre Berthier (1753 to 1815 ) was Prince and Duke of Neuchâtel and Valengin, Prince of Wagram, and Marshal of France. However, when he fell out of favour with the King for keeping secret a letter he had received from Napoleon, he retreated to Bamberg, where on 1 June 1815 he fell some 20 metres from a window on the 2nd floor of the imperial flats of the former prince-bishop's residence onto Residenzstraße and died (Bamberg defenestration). The end could just as well have been an accident as a suicide. Rumour has it that Berthier was killed by six masked men who threw him out.
