Two-handed swords emerged in the 14th century as a reaction to improved body armour and flourished in the late Middle Ages, steadily increasing in length until the Bidenhänder, commonly known as such, finally came into use during the Renaissance. They were mainly used by Landsknechts under Maximilian I. The long reach of a Bidenhänder was presumably advantageous against pikemen, halberdiers, lancers and mounted opponents.
