Figure 31232, without original box. 24th Michigan, A Company, 1863. Richard S. Dillon was born in New York around 1830. In 1862 he was working in an iron factory near Detroit. In July 1862, Richard S. Dillon was commissioned a first lieutenant and helped recruit and organise Company A. He and his company were mustered into Union service with the 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry in August 1862. Dillon was promoted to captain in June 1863 and was wounded four times during the Battle of Gettysburg. In his official report, Colonel Morrow wrote: "Captain Dillon commanded his company with great ability and conducted himself in a most exemplary manner." Dillon recovered remarkably quickly and returned to duty with the regiment on 30 August 1863. Dillon remained with the Army of the Potomac until the end of the war.
