Francisco Javier Castaños (1756-1852) was a Spanish general. He trained militarily in Prussia. Returning to Spain and promoted to colonel, he distinguished himself in the Army of Navarre in 1794, becoming major general in 1796 and lieutenant general in 1798. Appointed commander of Navarre in 1802, he was given command of the division in camp off Gibraltar in 1808 and, as commander-in-chief of the Army of Andalusia, forced the French general Dupont de l'Etang to surrender at the Battle of Bailén (23 July 1808). He then advanced as far as the Ebro, but was defeated by Lannes at Tudela on 23 November and so slandered by the scheming generals José de Palafox y Melci and Montijo at the central junta that he was deposed and out of service for several years. It was not until 1811 that he was placed at the head of the 4th Spanish Army Corps under Wellington's supreme command and made a major contribution to the victory at Vittoria.
