Under Hungarian influence, the hussars first found their way into the Polish army as light cavalry. The change to heavy cavalry, which replaced the medieval cavalry, was completed at the end of the 16th century under King Stefan Batory. The armoured Polish flügel hussars (hussaria) wore breastplates, bracers and knee-high leather boots. The name comes from the two large flukes attached to the saddle, which rose up to a metre above the head. They were intended to make the galloping hussars appear particularly fearsome by their noise and appearance. They also protected the hussars from blows and repelled the fanglassos used by the enemy Tartars. -Wikipedia-
