In the overall strategic plan of "Overlord", the code name for the Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy, the French village of Sainte-Mère-Église played a key role. It was identified on the battle plans as an important road junction that the Germans could use for quick counterattacks towards Utah and Omaha Beach. It was therefore of strategic importance to occupy the village immediately and ensure its domination by American airborne troops. In the early hours of 6 June 1944, paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Divisions, the two famous US airborne divisions, occupied the centre of the small French town after fierce fighting. The role of the American paratroopers has been depicted and celebrated in numerous films, from 1960s "The Longest Day" to more recent "war movies".
