The Hawker Hurricane was the most widely used fighter aircraft of the British Royal Air Force at the beginning of the Second World War. The Hurricane was powered by a liquid-cooled Rolls-Royce Merlin 12-cylinder in-line engine with over 1,000 hp, which gave it a top speed of over 500 km/h (310 mph). The eight 7.7 mm Browning machine guns with which it was equipped also ensured high firepower. Although it was aerodynamically slower and outdated compared to its famous "colleague", the Supermarine Spitfire, with which it was in service, especially during the Battle of Britain, it was nevertheless more robust, cheaper and easier to maintain and repair. It was also easier to fly, which led to faster pilot training and contributed decisively to victory in the Battle of Britain. Famous RAF aces such as D. Bader, M. Robinson and R. Stanford Tuck flew on the Hurricane.
