After Volkswagen had already started to develop a successor model for the extremely successful VW T2 Transporter series in 1975, Volkswagen presented the VW T3 series as its successor in May 1979. Originally, the specifications for the T3 already included a front engine with front-wheel drive. However, due to the VW Group's tight financial situation at the time, the need to develop a completely new generation of engines was cancelled during the course of development and the T3, like its two predecessors, was fitted with an air-cooled rear engine.
