As a successor to the VW Type 181, the German armed forces purchased the 0.5 t tmil gl truck from 1979 onwards, with the suffix gl standing for all-terrain. After the DKW Munga had already been developed and produced in Ingolstadt, the Volkswagen subsidiary Audi was also entrusted with the ILTIS project. The ILTIS was used by the Bundeswehr as a command and communications vehicle, but also as a carrier vehicle for anti-tank weapons, for transporting the wounded and for the general transport of personnel. For the developers at Audi, the all-wheel-drive ILTIS was also the inspiration for the construction of an all-wheel-drive road vehicle.
