The U-2 has been a valuable reconnaissance platform since its introduction in 1956 almost 70 years ago. In its current variant, the U-2 remains a vital component of intelligence gathering and reconnaissance for the U.S. Armed Forces. It is a highly flexible and modular system that allows sensors and cameras to be installed in the fuselage and the two large wing pods depending on the mission. Such a modular system, which is only installed when needed, is depicted here for the first time at a scale of 1:200: The huge radome on the backbone of this "Dragon Lady" is a satellite communications system known as the Senior Span. The radome allows the reconnaissance data collected by the U-2's sensors to be transmitted via satellite beyond line of sight to all corners of the world without delay.
