In the 1950s, Turkish Airlines was looking for new medium-haul aircraft to take advantage of technological advances in commercial aviation. The Vickers Viscount, the world's first turboprop aircraft with a pressurised cabin, seemed the best option for this. At the time, Middle East Airlines from Lebanon had cancelled its order with Vickers. Turkish Airlines seized this opportunity and ordered five "Rolls-Royces of the skies", as the Vickers Viscounts were often called, from the British aircraft manufacturer, which were delivered in 1958. Just one year later, Turkish Airlines modernised its appearance and introduced the "pyjama" livery with the red stripes on the nose and tail that is still familiar today.
