The origins of the Belgian "Societé anonyme belge d'Exploitation de la Navigation aérienne" (French for "Belgian Society for the Exploitation of Aviation") - or simply SABENA - date back to 1923. It operated flights to its European neighbours, but also pioneered long-distance flights to Africa, particularly to the then-colony of the Belgian Congo. Shortly before Sabena had to cease its operations in Europe due to the outbreak of World War II, it received its first two, then-revolutionary Douglas DC-3s. After the end of World War II, Sabena resumed operations, flying a fleet of C-47 transports, thousands of which had now become redundant. One of these early demilitarised C-47s converted to DC-3s was OO-AWN. Built for the US Air Force in 1943, it was also used for a short time by the Dutch Air Force in the East Indies, now Indonesia. In 1950 she was handed over to Sabena, where she remained part of the fleet until her decommissioning in 1969. Scale model true to the original for adult collectors.
