The original of this third edition of the Dreamliner, bearing the colors of Germany's largest airline, was also originally built for China's Hainan Airlines. However, when the airline canceled its order for several aircraft with Boeing, Lufthansa seized the opportunity for rapid availability and took delivery of the 787, now registered as D-ABPC, in early 2023. This third of currently five Dreamliners was named after Kiel, the capital of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein.
