Due to international embargoes, financial instability, and government interference, Venezuela's national airline can barely maintain an international route network. Three A340-600 aircraft, all now between 22 and 24 years old, are only used sporadically on routes to Cuba, Russia, and China. YV3535, originally delivered to Virgin Atlantic Airways in 2002, is named after Rafael José Urdaneta (1788-1845), a Venezuelan general and companion of Simón Bolívar during Spanish America's wars of independence from Spain in the early 19th century. "The Brilliant," as Urdaneta was called for his successful military strategies, later served as the fourth president of the short-lived Gran Colombia and is now revered as a national hero in Venezuela. Not only has Conviasa itself become a rare sight, but the 75-meter-long A340-600 is also becoming increasingly rare after it is slowly but steadily phased out by the current largest operator, Lufthansa, in the coming months.
