After no less than 50 years, the Belgian Armed Forces retired the last C-130 Hercules transport aircraft in 2021. Since then, Belgium has relied on the Airbus A400M Atlas for the transport of personnel, equipment, and relief supplies. These seven aircraft, along with a single A400M acquired by neighboring Luxembourg (previously produced under item no. 571722), are operated by the 20th Squadron of the 15th Air Transport Wing at Melsbroek Air Base at the north end of Brussels Airport. Since the new transport aircraft entered service, the two countries have officially formed a binational unit, allowing for flexible joint use of transport capacity as needed.
