Asiana Airlines was founded in 1988 to break Korea Air's monopoly in South Korea. It quickly developed into an internationally renowned airline with over 90 international passenger routes and 27 cargo routes in Asia, Europe, and North America. Its cargo division operated up to 16 Boeing 747-400 freighters and a single Boeing 767-300 freighter. After several years of financial difficulties, the Kumho Group, owner of Asiana Airlines, agreed to a merger with its largest competitor, Korean Air. The purchase was completed at the end of 2024. By 2026, South Korea's former second-largest airline will be fully integrated into Korean Air, bringing to an end Asiana Airlines' 38-year history. To obtain merger approval and address international concerns about the creation of a monopoly, Asiana sold its cargo division to cargo airline Air Incheon, including its sole Boeing 767 and eleven remaining 747 freighters, including HL7616.
