Europe, early 16th century
A single lansquenet could hardly stand up to the fully armoured knight on horseback. Several foot fighters working together, however, almost always decided the battle in their favour. One could fight the horse and make it fall or climb, cut the girth or drag the rider out of the saddle with the hooks on the helmet bars and pikes. The heavy fall of an armoured man from the withers of a large knight's horse caused ribs or limbs to break and usually immobilised him as the armour dented and wedged. The rest, if necessary, was done by the helmet bard ("helmet axe") with a crude blow. Contemporary depictions of the Battle of Murten (1483) show many dead knights with bloody split helmets.
Our series shows fighting lansquenets with helmet bards (halberds) and knights on horseback with lances.
