Scharfmetze, long cartaune, short cartaune and basilisk formed the 4 sexes of the "wall-breakers". It is Maximilian's great merit to have created a mobile siege artillery consisting of 4 types, an achievement that was eagerly imitated in the German field after his death.
The field artillery, which had become a decisive factor of military success as an accompanying gun of the Landsknechte since 1500, was also reformed by the Emperor and brought to 4 genders by standardising the calibres. The "Notschlange" was created as the heaviest calibre. Like all snakes, it was a long barrel gun for direct fire. Ammunition: iron ball 11 - 16 pounds, 8 horses had to be used for transport.
