Belting machine of the Middle Ages, it appeared from about 1200.
(Reconstruction after Viollet-Le-Duc). During the reign of Napoleon III, General Fave carried out experiments with an old-style Bliede, the framework of which was 8 m high and the swivel 10.3 m long. The counterweight (4500 kg) hoisted by four men could hurl the 150 kg stone ball 150 m and the machine could throw six times an hour. To hurl such colossal loads, as the old chroniclers report, the dimensions of the machines had to be enormous. For example, to propel 1400 kg at 70 m, the counterweight would have to be 16,400 kg, and the propelling arm of the swivel 16.5 m, if, according to Napoleon, the load arm was kept at a ratio of 1:5. This would make huge machines, which could hardly be produced with the means of the time, although wood was not sparingly used (a mangle taken apart in St. Paul in 1428, which was replaced by a bombarde, delivered 26 wagonloads of wood.
