During the Battle of Vionville/Mars la Tour, the 1st Prussian Guard Dragoons had to relieve the hard-pressed infantry by launching an attack at great loss of life.
The fatally wounded commander of the 1st Prussian Guard Dragoon Regiment, Colonel von Auerswald, rode to his death in front of the remnants of his squadron, shouting Hurrah for King Wilhelm I of Prussia! before handing over his regiment to the cavalry captain, Prince von Hohenzollern.
