Inspired by a painting based on the poem by Nikolaus Lenau "The Three Gypsies".
Nikolaus Lenau:
The Three Gypsies
Three gypsies I once found
Lying by a meadow,
When my carriage with weary agony
Sneaked through sandy heath.
One held a fiddle for himself
In his hands,
Playing, glowed by the evening light,
A fiery song to himself.
The second held the pipe in his mouth,
Looking at his smoke,
Happy, as if he needed nothing more from the earth
To be happy.
And the third slept comfortably,
And his cimbal hung on the tree.
Over the strings the breath of wind ran,
Over his heart a dream went.
On their garments the three
wore holes and coloured patches,
But they defiantly freely
offered mockery to the earth's fates.
Three times they have shown me,
When life nights us,
How it is smoked, slept on, wasted,
And despised three times over.
As I drove on, I had to look for the gypsies,
for their dark brown faces,
the black curly hair.
