A fort castle is a castle form that originated in the Mediterranean region from the time of the Crusades, but gained a foothold in Europe at the latest with the introduction of firearms, i.e. in the late period of castle building. It describes the modern form of the fort. Castles, and castles in general, were often retrofitted in the early modern period with round bastions, angular bastions, roundels or turrets to form fortifications, or they were newly built as such during the late Gothic or Renaissance periods.
