The Nibelungen saga is a heroic epic that was widely known throughout the German and Scandinavian Middle Ages and has been handed down over the centuries in numerous versions that differ from one another. Its best-known written record is the Middle High German *Nibelungenlied* (c. 1200, probably from the Passau area). A historical core of the saga is the destruction of the Burgundian kingdom in the Worms area in late antiquity (c. 436) by the Roman Magister Militum Aetius with the aid of Hunnic auxiliary troops. A banquet at King Etzel?s court. Before the battle in the hall.
