The legend surrounding the origin of the Order of the Pankgrave The origin of the Order of the Pankgrave is a modern myth. According to this self-created legend, the founding of the Order goes back to the year 1381 with the great count Udo with the split claw. At that time, Udo, "in association with other righteous knights", put to flight the "predatory rabble" in the "memorable battle at the Lausefenn" near the village of Pankow. Under the leadership of Udo, the "victorious peacemakers" then formed an order of knights, the Pankgrafen-Vereinigung. In the following decades and centuries, they would have provided commercial escort services to travelling merchants and thus contributed to raising public safety "for all citizens and peasants". "The traces of the Pankgrafschaft" disappeared in the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War. "Fate prepared Udo a spectacular life [and just such an end. According to legend, at the end of his life, the battle-hardened and victorious Udo threw himself into the floods in full armour out of grief at the fact that the little river Panke, this magnificent Mark Brandenburg stream with its black-green-grey-blue waves, was about to be thrown overboard, but unfortunately did not find the desired rest in this musty grave. [For every 50 years his] gruesome fate leads him back to the earthly world to see whether the waters are still there and whether the descendants still remain true to his motto of doing good - friendship - fatherland."
