Before firing in platoon formations, the odd-numbered and even-numbered platoons took turns taking three quick, long strides forward of the battalion front to charge and fire. The battalion would slow its pace each time in order to regroup the pelotons afterwards. This ?marching fire? advanced towards the enemy.
